CIFS Abend Issues Resolved, Post NW 6.5 SP6 CIFS Modules Installed (65CIFS325C)
I'm curious to know if anyone else has a NetWare CIFS in the PDC mode in production with stability issues - especially with ZenWorks 7 Middle Tier Server on NetWare?
We have no Windows or Samba servers in our Domain, only two NetWare 6.5 post SP6 servers with one configured to be the PDC and the other server joined to the PDC. Both servers will work fine for about 12 hours after configuration, then we see a cifsproxy.nlm Abend which kills CIFS completely on both servers.
Abend appears to be related to any random user login via a Windows 'Client-less' ZenWorks 7 Agent login via the NetWare Middle Tier server. Universal Password has been enabled for some users, and simple password only for others - same issue. We have also tried a similar configuration on both servers in Workgroup mode and we receive the same abend after a Middle Tier client login. Clients are a mix of fully patched, NCP 'Client-less' Windows 2000 and XP workstations, using the latest public ZfD agents and client utilities.
Novell Support (Netware & Zenwork Teams) are aware of this issue, but since they cannot consistently reproduce it there is no fix available (or forthcoming) at this time. We have decided to try OES SuSE Linux Samba instead, but as we are still learning Linux this is a very slow moving 'fix'.
I have same problem (CIFS PDC, CIFSPROX Abend on NMAS.NLM).
P.S. 65CIFS325C.zip released.
Fixes: ... - Page Fault Processor ABEND in CIFSPROX.NLM (252360)
All works here, no abends more. Seems CIFS Abend Issues fixed.
Broadcom issue with DELL 830, 2650, and 2850 and HP Proliant ML350R04 model 6/3400
I had a weird issue that I have happen 3 times on 6 servers.
They all have the broadcom b57 driver. Everything was working fine and then sp6. On 3 of the 6 servers the driver board configuration, specifically the "board status" changed from "enabled" to "forced". "Line Speed: Automatic detection was still enabled. However, when I checked the Cisco switch, the speed did not match. I checked the switch and it was forced to 1000 FD. When I unplugged te ethernet cord and plugged it back in, it said that it was trying to link at 10 half duplex. I changed the board status from "Forced" to "enabled" rebooted, and everything was fine.
Also, still issues with iPrint even after all the beta patches.
Reproducable abend during Veritas backup
I'm testing SP6 on one of my internal servers before deployment to client sites.
This server is set up to backup across the wire to a remote server running Backup Exec.
After a few gigs on the backup, the SP6 patched server abends either in Apache or while trying to cleanup an address space. Since the only protected memory space on this server is Apache admin, it's again related to a problem with Apache.
I tried a few simple and obvious things, like updating the BIOS, switching from the CE1000.lan driver to the recommended E1000.lan driver, and installing the latest Backup Exec build. No joy.
Finally, I unloaded both occurrences of Apache and ran the backup. I got over 100GB backed up with no problems. Much joy.
So, I have a work around but I remain concerned about wider deployment.
My problem with SP6.
I have put this on two servers so far and have run into a significant delay if I select to update the iManager plugins. It will sit there for several hours before the updates are downloaded from the Novell site.
I see the same problem running the updates from iManager 2.5 or higher. It sees that the updates are there but certain ones take forever to download. I suspect that the Novell download site is overloaded or it is only accepting a limited number of connections. I wish someone at Novell would look into this problem because it isn't just me that has experienced this.
I've seen abends posted for phpmyadmin within the adminsrv namespace. I am experiencing this as well but so far the only suggestion has to been call Novell. Unfortunately we can't plunk down the $650 for the call. Here is the details if it helps:

- Probably solved with PHP 5.2.3 or higher
Novell is only deploying PHP 5.0.5 but I've found that this version using with MySQL 4.1 will cause the server (or address space if you're smart and running Apache in it's own space) to abend. All my research led me to realize that I would have to downgrade MySQL to 4.0.26 (which would not be a pleasant) or see if I could upgrade PHP to a stable version. Gwenter has generously compiled PHP 5.2.3 for Netware and it has remained stable for me for 20 hours at the time of this writing. Originally it was only staying up for about 2 to 4 hours before abending after I moved from SP2 to SP6. Bill Prehl 09:35, 26 July 2007 (EST)
I am getting a "BuildBanner() failed" error on my logger screen after installing sp6. Any help would be appreciated.
Slow access and NDPSGW problems.
File access to server is slow and backups are also taking twice as long after applying SP6. NDPSGW.NLM is consuming memory until the server abends. We have applied the latest NDPSupdate from January 29 2007 (novpatch3761.zip) but no change.
Reinstalling SP6 solved the slow access to the server problem.
To solve the NDPSGW problem we created a new NDPS-manager object and created new ndps-printers and the ndpsgw.nlm started to consume memory when we created the npds-object of a sharp-printer. We located a sharp-ndps gateway via google http://www.sharp.marcocentral.net/USharpNDPSGateway031704.zip and installed it. It worked fine after we created a new sharp ndps-printer with the new gateway.
Rsync Copy Error 6.5 SP2
Rsync broken in Netware 6.5 SP 6? Go back to SP5.
I have two Netware 6.5 SP5 servers in my environment. One server Rsyncs to the other every night. I upgraded my backup server to Netware 6.5 SP6 to test SP6 before I deployed it to my main server. Everything seemed okay except Rsync broke. Rync appeared to copy the directories properly to the destination server. Rsync would start to copy the files. The usual temp file would be created and called for example, "file.txt.000224", then the file would be deleted and the next file would copy "file2.txt.000224", that file would be deleted and so on. At the end of the transfer when Rsync tried to rename each file to it's correct name (file.txt), it would report that the file did not exist, Error Code 23. If I checked the Salvage Files, all of the temp files were listed on the backup server directory. So it didn't seem to be a permissions issue. Additionally the primary server said the transfer was successful in it's log files. I checked my Rsync config files and they were the same as Gary Childer's in his "Rsync Cool Solutions" document. I am doing a simple Volume rsync without SSL. Then I hooked up a Windows workstation to Rsync as a test and got the same results. I tried replacing my Rsync*.nlm(s) in my \etc\rsync with the SP5 version on the other server. That did not help. I finally uninstalled SP6 on my backup server and the problem was fixed! Rsync is working again.
Zen7 Imaging fail
Error: PXE-T04 Illegal TFTP operation Error: PXE-E36 Error received from TFTP server
Server running 4 days after Update fine. Then TFTP stops with errors. Nameresolution on Netware Server fail? Only Solution: Reboot Server, then tftp working again some days.
SOLUTION: To verify this issue open NRM, go to protocol information and open udp if you see a long list of open udp ports you get a problem with some services this open port will never closed until the next reboot when the number of open ports reached 4999 the server stops working with tftp and other ip services like dns
we patched the server with wsock6k-update and the problem is gone
XMGR.NLM memory leak
XMGR.NLM seems to continually grab more memory. One of my servers it is at 64825% of its original size (367MB) and growing! All the servers, 13 total, are showing this, but the ones that have been up the longest are the worst. The one I mention only has 3 users connecting to it and use it only minimally, if at all. This might be related to the following two issues. MChandler
NTS discovered the cause of this issue. They may be issuing a fix soon. It appears that two values are causing LDAP to refresh constantly and that was causing the leak. They manually edited the values and it cured it throughout our entire tree which was several hundred servers. MChandler
Unable to unlock screen saver
We're unable to unlock the screen saver since upgrading to SP6. We can use the admin account and that works. I have discovered that if I change my password it works for about a day and then stops working. MChandler
- I also cannot unlock the screensaver after SP6 on our web development server. However on the web production server , which was the first to receive SP6, we can. I do not understand why this is. The workaround suggested in the has not worked...we were already set for no default login sequence. Also setting it to NDS did not work. Gallwapa 11:11, 25 April 2007 (MDT)
We're get multiple abends when unlocking screensaver on serveral updated servers, the solution we found in TID 3845330, like nwftp the scrsaver.nlm use the NMAS method to authentication , renaming SYS:SYSTEM\SPMNWCC.NLM resolve the problem. --Keyl 01:38, 2 August 2007 (MDT)Andy 02. August 2007
Our issue appeared to be caused by the universal password setting. Loading scrsaver with the universal option has cured this for us. MChandler
Cache memory allocator out of available memory
I keep seeing error messages that Java was unable to request more memory. Server has 2GB memory. The java apps I have running are: APC Network shutdown, ZENLoader (ZfS agent component), and Dell openmanage. This is the error message:
2-21-2007 1:50:19 am: SERVER-5.70-0 [nmID=6001D] Cache memory allocator out of available memory.
2-21-2007 1:50:19 am: SERVER-5.70-0 [nmID=2000A] Short term memory allocator is out of memory. 28 attempts to get more memory failed. request size in bytes 135355754 from Module JAVA.NLM
We also are getting Cache memory allocator out of available memory errors after applying NW65SP6. This is on a Dell server with 4 Gb RAM, but it appears that instead of Java requesting additional RAM, it is Symantec AV (RTVSCAN.NLM) that is having trouble allocating additional RAM. We are running Symantec Runtime Virus Protect NLM version 10.00, dated September 27,2006.
4-08-2007 1:04:38 am: SERVER-5.70-0 [nmID=6001D] Cache memory allocator out of available memory.
4-08-2007 1:04:38 am: SERVER-5.70-0 [nmID=2000A] Short term memory allocator is out of memory. 5 attempts to get more memory failed. request size in bytes 69901516 from Module RTVSCAN.NLM
We also had applied SP6 in March 07 to one production server having IP disconnect issues. SP6 fixed the that problem but introduced the "Cache memory allocator" problem (nmID=6001D) within a day. We don't believe the problem is related to WHICH app is requesting more memory, it's just not available. The only solution we've found is a server reboot... of course, rebooting a NetWare server every 4 days is to reminiscent of WinNT. Shouldn't we add this problem to the main Article page under "known issues"? ChrisAMeyers 5/17/07
This is no general "Cache memory allocator" issue. Cache memory allocator problems may have many different causes, and it's an issue which always needs to be investigated in detail with tools like SEG.NLM. The only thing common between those issues is the error message you may get on the console. But that doesn't mean it's the same issue. Best is to go to http://support.novell.com/forums/2nw.html and report your problem int he NetWare 6.x abends/hang forum. There, the problem can be analyzes in more detail and we may be able to find out what your particular problem is. Marcel 02:00, 18 May 2007 (MDT)
Check out the Cool Solutions page for a memory tuning tool designed for NW65. The tool only works for NW65 with SP3 or above. I used it on my other NW65 server and I've stopped these Short term memory allocator messages. I just upgraded my web server to SP6 and I'm going to use the memory tool on it as well. When you read about Netware's memory model you will understand why the memory tuning tool is so crucial. Moving to SLES will solve this since that OS handles memory allocation differently and more effectively. Bill Prehl 09:35EST 26 July 2007
This probably won't help your memory allocator problems, but here is a tip for using OM (OpenManager) on Netware that got rid of JAVA abends I was experiencing as far back as SP3. When you install OM, uncheck all options. That sounds odd, but just try it. It will load the OM modules, but no web gui. You can do many things from the console command line to get the information that is normally available in the web interface. It isn't as convenient to use, but it is stable and helpful for finding out information about your system without having to reboot. --Tbiles 10:02, 17 September 2007 (MDT)
Ever since Service Pack 6 was loaded, iManager and iPrint have not worked correctly. I have installed all of the post patches that needed correcting after this service pack. I am still having problems getting iManager and iPrint to work correctly. Has anyone else having these problems with SP6?

Abend in NDSINST.NLM
Abend in NDSINST.NLM (SNMP modules for eDirectory). Bug report available: 266180
- I moved this the the article to the discussion section because without more details, this information is not very useful to other people. --Marcel 01:30, 4 May 2007 (MDT)
- OK, but the bug report isn't made public and the bug still exist in SP7. But sinds people can load it by change they should be warned in my humble opinion.
There are many more or less obscure bugs that are known by Novell and that are not documented. The purpose of the main article is not to document any possible bug there is, but rather the most common and the most important issues specific to SP6 and possible ways to fix or avoid the problem. Personally, I would consider the issue to fall under the general security recommendation to never allow public SNMP access to the server. Marcel 01:23, 10 May 2007 (MDT)

Problems with Java patch novpatch3864
When doing my SP6 updates, I decided to only apply this patch to some of my systems in the event that a new java version would cause problems with other java applications. In my case, I only have iManager. In comparison over the last 2 months, the system that I had the novpatch3864 java applied to would abend when using iManager (generally after the system had been up for some period of time). Once of my SP6 java nodes did not have any abends when using iManager.
The post SP6 java server was starting to abend almost every day once school was back in session and iManager was getting heavy use for password resets and the like. Last week, I put the original SP6 java back in place, and the server has been stable for almost a week, even when still using iManager heavily.
Another thing I noticed with the novpatch3864 patch applied was that tzupdater would still fail the test with this update that was supposed to fix the DST issues (java -jar sys:\tmp\tzupdater.jar -t -v). I had to reapply tzupdater anyway. Anyone else see this problem? --Tbiles 10:12, 17 September 2007 (MDT)
Upgrading from N6sp5 to Novell 6.5 sp 6
I have a number of server which are Proliant ml370 G3, G2 and g1 but every time i upgrade the box it hangs on detecting new hardware/installing new hardware when the box reboots.
can't see the abend because hangs and have to reboot through ilo, i think it was loading acpidrv but took this out of c:\nwserver\drivers and have gone to multi threading in the bios to disable this but no joy.
have rolled this back to netware 6.0 with some tweaking
Thanks for your intending help.
